Audience responses to HAiR!
"This is the best thing to happen to Portland in a long time."
"I hate musicals, but I loved this!"
"We wanted to get naked, too!"
"Awesome show... kudos to you and everyone involved..."
"It was great, just fantastic! Best three hours I've spent in a theater in Portland, and I've spent a lot of time in theaters here. You did a wonderful job with limited space. The
musicians were impressive, very involved, very shirtless."
"I thoroughly enjoyed your production of Hair on Saturday. It was a great Mothers Day
present for my Mom. (she just turned 50) I've told everyone I know that they must see it!"
"The production was daring and fabulously risky. I didn't know the story much at all, nor
did I realize that there would be that much political commentary, not to mention nudity. It
was a very thought provoking evening for me. I can't think of many better ways to express
discontent for our current administration and its actions than doing something such as
your show. You go!"
"We loved the show, most of all for the wonderful ebullience of it all and the stirrings of
enthusiasm in the audience, in the entire street, actually."
"Thank you so much for Hair! It was fantastic."
"The guitar & bass player rock!"
"Our family had a great time at "Hair" yesterday. My son is an actor and has performed in
many high-school and college plays. He really enjoyed "Hair" and said he wished he
could've been in it."
"I want to thank you and the cast for an excellent production. The show had an
unexpected emotional whallop for me. The hallucination scenes in the 2nd act were
powerful. The last scene moved me to tears, and being a "grown man" and grown men
aren't supposed to cry, at least not in public. I couldn't help it, I didn't know it was
coming; it just sort of arose right out of my subconscious spontaneously. It's been a long
time since I went to a theatre production that packed such an emotional whallop for me.
Obviously you all did an excellent job considering the conditions that you all worked
under, a converted garage on Alberta St., low budget, all the heat, etc., etc,. I feel like the performance was heartfelt and I'm grateful. Now that last scene where Claude joins the
Army and his soul dies is such a poignant scene because it was so symbolic for me. Claude
is symbolic for my generation, the Baby Boom generation. I feel that many of our
generation have either sold their souls or were never "awake" in the first place. Our
generation is putting together an Establishment that is far worse than the one we railed
against back in the 60's. That is the source of the pain that your final scene awoke in me. I keep remembering the elder George's words: Where is that kinder gentler society? It just
seems like the whole country has gone crazy after Junior George was elected. So, to
you and all the people who worked so hard on this show: Thanks for your dedication,
your hard work and your hope. Your show spoke to my heart."
"I have seen six or seven productions of 'Hair,' two of them road shows, and one at the
Edinburgh Festival, and I hope you take some well deserved pride in being the most truly
authentic of them all. If there ever was an ensemble piece, 'Hair' is it. It soars to the
heavens or falls on its flat funny painted face depending on the Tribe. Your Tribe flew
high and everyone had their shining moment. It was in particular the most remarkable
choral work that caught my ear, and repeatedly had the hair on my arms and at the back of
my neck standing straight on end. 'Let the Sun Shine' had me in tears and has only gained
resonance with current events. 'Listening for the new told lies' indeed. As a group, I
hope you receive the accolades you most deserve without the slightest reservation or
cravat. It is the greatest power of your praiseworthy production, and an element of those
times, a feeling of fellowship on the streets and in the public parks, that you show most
commendably grasped and reproduced for the audience. Bravo! Everyone! You can
expect me again, in the front row with friends."
"Put me on your mailing list for your upcoming performances!"
